Welcome
to IDS!
Whether you are a prospective family seeking to learn
more about IDS, a graduate who is looking to reconnect with the
school, or a current student looking for information about a trip or
a concert, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the IDS web site. We have
designed the web site to make it easy to visit the many parts of our
program. If you are looking for information about our program for young
children, the Early Childhood section of our
Lower School will tell you how our program meets the needs of children
starting with age three and progressing through first grade. Grades
2-5 programs are included in the Lower School
section, and grades 6-8 programs are part of our Middle
School section. The calendar contains the schedule for upcoming
interscholastic contests and for our many plays and concerts. You can
learn more about our performing arts and our sports programs by clicking
on the links throughout this letter.
Alumni/ae of IDS, dont miss the pages
dedicated to our graduates, including class notes, alumni/ae profiles,
and alumni/ae events. If you are new to IDS, let me share a little about
the schools history because it tells
you a great deal about us today. In 1960, civic leaders in Middletown
and Wallingford joined with professors at Wesleyan and teachers at Choate-Rosemary
Hall to found IDS. Their goal was to provide the areas children
with an outstanding elementary and middle school education. The school
arose out of a sense of service to the community, and we continue that
tradition by strongly promoting community service and citizenship for
our students.
As you might imagine, a school founded by educators has academic excellence
as one of its highest values. Not surprisingly, we continue to have
more educators among our parent body than any other profession. They
know and value excellence in teaching. Our graduates leave IDS prepared
to excel academically whether they attend a fine public or parochial
high school or one of the demanding area independent schools.
Fortunately, our teachers and families know that, unlike programming
a computer, helping children reach their academic potential is possible
only by attending to their social and emotional needs. Children will
feel comfortable taking the appropriate risks needed to learn a new
subject, perform in a play, or make a new friend, if they belong to
a school community in which they feel safe and in which they are given
opportunities to stretch themselves.
We hope that your visit to this web site will encourage you to contact
the Admission Office for information about our Open
Houses or other ways to visit IDS.
